What a wonderful way to deal with such situations Patrick. I run a famous radio crazefm.com and there we got request system where some users do abuse some features like going nuts and making multiple accounts. I get mails such as these "why can he and I can't" What I don't get at that point is what makes that user even think that as an admin I would say "oh ok go ahead you can do it too" But I do have lovely members who mail me if someone is going out of line, this has made us one of the most friendliest communities .. which always is rocking :)

Amazing tip, Patrick! This technique is often the default fallback when someone feels threatened, so I also think that it is possible to avoid this situation entirely (in a lot of cases, at least) by structuring the community in such a fashion that users don't feel backed into a corner.

In my most recent experience, we had this reaction from a staff member! In these situations, remember everything you've learned about holding effective meetings, and bring the conversation back on topic.
